How Do Ball Bearings Work?
Ball bearings work to make something spin. Ball Beaings are found in many different applications, and although the ball bearing itself is just a round metal ball, the appearance of a set of bearings can look vastly different from one application to another. Some are just ball bearings rolling free in bearing cups, some are in sealed setups that look more like a donut than a bearing, and some are hidden from view altogether, such as those in a fishing pole or bicycle wheel.
Basically, a ball bearing system places small smooth spheres between two other smooth surfaces. An inline skate wheel, for example, has a smooth inner ring and a larger smooth outer ring with small balls in between, the balls ‘bear the load’ and allow the two rings to rotate with a minimum of friction, creating fast, efficient movement.
